General Counseling Information

Cal Grant Opt Out
California public high schools are required to submit a Cal Grant high school Grade Point Average (GPA) for all graduating seniors, unless the student or parent has opted out of the submission process. California Education Code section 69432.9 requires the school district or charter school, no later than January 1 of a pupil’s grade 11 academic year, to notify each grade 11 pupil and his or her parent or guardian that the pupil will be deemed a Cal Grant applicant unless the pupil is opted out prior to the high school’s submission of GPAs to the Commission. Students who do not opt out will have their GPA submitted to the Commission to be considered for a Cal Grant award. If you do not want your school to report a GPA, please complete this form and return it to your high school counselor.

Cal Grant gives funds to every eligible senior student who meets the requirements. A Cal Grant can pay for tuition, room and board, or books and other supplies for California colleges. Cal Grant applicants must also file the FAFSA or the California Dream Act application, as this is how you apply for Cal Grants (if you complete a FAFSA, then you are automatically in the running for a Cal Grant if you meet the requirements and March 2nd deadline in your senior year).

Questions or concerns? See your school counselor.

The Counseling program provides student services which are helpful to high school students in planning for further education or employment after graduation. The role for the high school counselor is to assist the student in making sound educational and personal decisions to reach their goals. Students are seen a minimum of twice during the school year for the development or modification of the four-year plan for graduation, college a-g requirements, verification of second-semester schedule, summer school registration, and other educational needs.

Student - Students may see their counselor by appointment only, except in the case of emergencies or crisis situations when the counselors are immediately available. Under normal circumstances, appointments are scheduled for the day following the student's request. Students may schedule an appointment to see their counselor at the Counseling Center before school (7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.); during their lunch period; or after school (2:35 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.).
Parents - To give parents full attention, it is recommended that appointments to meet with the counselor be made in advance. Parents may schedule appointments by calling the Counseling Center between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (For further information concerning the Counseling Services and Information please see the Student and Parent Handbook).

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE - Parents who wish to meet with their student's teachers can call the counseling office and request a parent/teacher conference. These appointments are on a preset day after school. Parents can also e-mail their teachers and/or counselor directly as indicated in the Aeries Parent Portal.

MAKE-UP WORK BECAUSE OF ABSENCE - All work must be promptly made up after an absence. 1. If a student is truant from school, the teacher is not obligated to permit him/her to make-up any work, but the final decision is up to the teacher. 2. A student who misses because of illness, authorized extracurricular activity, or suspension must be given an opportunity to make-up work - usually one day is allowed for each day absent. 3. It is definitely the responsibility of the student to take the initiative to ask the teacher to secure make-up work. It is NOT up to the teacher to keep after a student because of the student's absence. 4. Students who are ill for more than five (5) days may request assignments by calling the Counseling Center. Please allow at least 48 hours for the teachers to be contacted and then to respond. A parent or friend may pick-up the assignments from the receptionist in the Administration Office. Parents can confirm the absence is cleared through Aeries. (For further information concerning make-up work please see the Student and Parent Handbook).
